George Washington Witham & Catherine Bunch Witham

WOW! Becky's detective work has paid off - BIGTIME! She was able to track down a distant relative named Jack Payne who is also a descendant of George Washington and Catherine Bunch Witham. Jack has a picture of GW and Catherine that he was kind enough to share with us. GW and Catherine are the older couple in the back.

This was posted under the photo when it was sent to Jack Payne:

"Your great, great, great grandfather and your Grand father's namesake. George Washington Witham and his Cherokee descended wife, Catherine Bunch. R.A. his son and family in the front"

We have Robert Alexander Witham listed as a son of George Washington Witham, so I assume that is the R.A. (along with his family) that is mentioned.

Also, we have suspected that Catherine Bunch was of Cherokee descent for a long time, as we've heard several rumors about this from multiple sources. The note that was included with this photo seems to further support this theory!

George Washington Witham and Catherine Bunch Witham are the parents of Francis Calvin Witham. Until the discovery of this photo, Francis Calvin and his wife, Mary Susan "Molly" Raines were the oldest generation we had photos for, so this photo takes us a whole generation back!

Thank you to Becky for your hard work and to Jack for sharing. We appreciate you both!

The label says the photo was taken in Desda, KY.
Desda is a town in Clinton County, KY, North of Albany.

Henry Clay Witham

Becky found a nice picture of an older Henry Clay Witham. Henry Clay Witham is the nephew of Francis Calvin Witham. Henry Clay's father is William Granville Witham, Francis Calvin's brother.

I love it when we find old pictures and old stories. It helps us get a sense of who our ancestors really were.

You can find more information on Henry Clay Witham in our family tree at Ancestry.com. If you don't already have access to our family tree, just send me a note and I'll send you an invitation to the tree.

NOTES:

John Wittum, grant of land 1703, fifty acres.

The Tidy family has been difficult to trace back further than Elizabeth's father, who was born in Scarborough, Maine, between 1649 and 1655. In a book about New England genealogy, the author tells about two maiden ladies with that surname and said that, when they pass on, the Tidy name will have disappeared in America; the line has "daughtered out." Elizabeth's mother, Sarah Libby, was the daughter of the immigrant, John Libby, who came from Wales and died in Scarborough, Maine. In 1676, they were living in Black Point Garrison.

General Notes: Child - John Witham
Rev. Samuel Chandler, pastor of the Scotland (York County) Church, made the following entry in his diary:
1746 Feb, 10 I visited the sick -- went up to Mr. Kilgore's to John Wittims -- he say he likes the Quakers best of any -- thinks that way is the Best. His wife says seems more terrible to her than Death - when she thinks of it she is just ready to sink."

General Notes: Child - Gideon Wittum
A Rev. Samuel Chandler was ordained on 20 January 1742 and became the pastor of the Scotland (York County, Maine) Church. He kept a diary, portions of which still exist, and the following extract gives a picture of his life and that of his parishioners:

"Jan. 6 ...Then I went to Gideon Whitham's. she spoke of her little son now sick of a fever that he sd he was willing to leave Father and Mother to go to Christ -- that he loved Christ -- he reproved others for speaking bad words ..."

In May 1756, England made a declaration of war against France. The recapture of Louisburg was again planned but temporarily postponed to meet the necessities of the greater strategy of the coming campaigns. At this time soldiers of York were actively engaged in service at Ft. Williamand Henry, at the head of Lake George, to which relief had been rushed. The loyal troops arrived there two months later, about October 1756, under the command of Capt. Joseph Holt. His company was attached to the regiment of Col. Ichabod Goodwin, and Gideon Witham was a private. (History of York, Maine, Vol I, by Charles Edward Banks, p. 339). This company was still in service the following year.

Peter Wittum was a yeoman (turner) in Kittery, Maine.

He deposed in April 1729 that he was a soldier at Blue Point under Capt. Winscoll fifty two or three years earlier. NOTE FROM MIKE: I FOUND THE FOLLOWING REFERENCE TO CAPT. WINSCOLL THAT LINES UP WITH THE DATE GIVEN BY PETER WITTUM. IT APPEARS THIS PETER WITTUM FOUGHT IN THE INDIAN WARS:

"From Bodge's book conerning the Indian wars:
1676: --“Scottow was very angry with Mackshawine for saying that Captaine Winscoll & his company were all cut off, telling him though some might be killed and the rest fled yet it might be to gain advantage of ground as it proved---”. From Bodges “Soldiers in King Phillips War” pg 334"

In 1686, he exchanged land with his brother, William, getting fifty acres on Sturgeon Creek between Leonard Drown and William Sanders.

In 1694, he received a grant of ten acres from Kittery, and later received another twenty acres from that town.

In March 1723/24, he deeded to his son John after death of self and wife Eunice.

In 1730, they had lived in York for six months when he was ordered to leave town. His wife could not be found at the time. Peter was often fined for small offenses, especially for not attending church.

Three of Peter's sons, John, Andrew, and Daniel, took upland in Bell Marsh Brook region north of Agamenticus Hill close to Scotland, York County, Maine, about 1725.

Next time, we'll meet Peter & Annis' son, John Wittum.

Witham Family Cemetery

We've been covering a blog post series on the new line of Withams we just discovered. I would like to take a quick break from that series to cover something else that just popped up. We'll get right back to our series after this, but this is too good not to share right away.

Let's talk about the Witham Family Cemetery.

The Witham Family Cemetery is where George Washington Witham and his wife, Catherine Bunch are buried. George and Catherine are the parents of Francis Calvin Witham. There are other Withams buried there, too.

The Witham Family Cemetery is located about 10 miles from Albany, KY in Clinton County off Highway 127 North. It's located on the Newman Ryan farm just past Aaron Ridge Road. You can see the cemetery from Highway 127 N.

Our Becky Bucalo (great-granddaughter of Alex Clay Witham) has a contact near the Witham Family Cemetery who agreed to go take pictures of it for us. Our deepest appreciation goes out to Judy Reneau for spending her time and resources taking these pictures that mean so much to us. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

And a big thank you to Becky for her continued effort in helping us further develop our family history.

Here are the pictures:

Peter Wittum - The Withams come to America

Next we get to meet Peter & Mary's son, Peter Wittum. Most of us know that our line of Withams came from Kentucky, but have you ever wondered where we came from before that? We're about to find out...

This Peter Wittum was born around 1627 in Steeple Parish, Essex, England.
He died around 1697 or 1698 in Kittery, Province of Massachusetts Bay, now Maine. He was around age 70.

Peter Wittum emigrated to Massachusetts, then settled in Kittery, Maine.

On 17 Jun 1652 when Peter was 25, he married Redigon Clark in Boston, Massachusetts.

Redigon Clark:
Born about 1627 in Kittery, Maine. Redigon died in Kittery, Maine on 18 Mar 1700. She was 73. Her father was Robert Clark. Her mother was Ruddegoe Weare.

They had the following children:
Mary (1653-1653)
Elizabeth (1654-1654)
Peter (1656->1730)
Ichabod (~1658-)
William (~1660-)
Sarah (~1664-)
Hannah (~1669-)
Elizabeth (~1670-)
Ruth (1672-)
Abigail (1674-1705)

Peter and his wife Redigon were mentioned frequently in land records as well as legal records. Here are some of the mentions we were able to uncover:

* In 1660, Peter had taken in the highway between Kittery House and Sturgeon Creek.

* In 1661, Peter slandered James Heard's wife.

* In 1664, Peter was sued by Richard Cutts.

* On 2 Jan 1665, Peter had a grant of land and lived a little North of Sturgeon Creek.

* On 14 Mar 1672/3 he bought a parcel of swamp from Abraham Conley for the sum of 5 pounds.

* On 17 July 1673, Peter and his wife, Redigon, signed a deed with their marks to sell two acres of upland and swamp to Nicolas Hodgsden.

* On 18 Sep 1678, Peter sold the full and just quantity of 40 acres of swamp and upland to Nicolas Hodgsden for 11 pounds, 10 shillings.

* In 1684, Peter was taken to court for being drunk and putting his wife and children out of doors.

* On 16 March 1685 , Peter “conveys, assigns and sets over one half of my premises to my son William. I reserve for may own use, during the time of my own and my wife’s natural lives and to include the side fence for security and to be kept tenantable. My son is to pay me 14 bushels of Indian corn yearly and 7 bushels to be paid to my wife yearly following my decease.”

* On 15 Jan 1690, Peter sold to Samuel Small for 60 pounds "all that messuage or tenement which I formerly lived upon with about 16 acres of land belonging scituate on Sturgeon Creek."

* On 16 Jan 1704, Peter sold fpr 4 pounds to William Furbish "a parcel of land scituate lying in Kittery containing 25 acres."

* Peter's wife Redigon was also presented for stealing cloth from Abra Conly. She was examined for her offense and "upon her ingenuous confession and Abra Conleys satisfaction, by Admonition was accquitted, paying only the Marshall's fees"

* Peter was on a list of sufferers from the Indians in the Second War.

* Both Peter and Redigon were mentioned more than once in the York County, Maine records for not attending church, for drinking, and playing cards.

Peter also had another wife, named Eunice.

Wow! How was all of that for interesting?! Next time, we'll talk about Peter and Redigon's son, also named Peter.

Peter Wittum

Next, we meet Thomas Wittum's son, Peter Wittum. We don't know much about him, as you'll soon see, but here is everything we know at this point. We'll be sure to add new information as it develops.

Peter Wittum
Born about 1595 in Steeple Parish, Essex, England.

On 7 Dec 1616 when Peter was 21, he married Mary Lufkin in St Clement Danes, Middlesex, England. (Recorded in the Bishop of London’s office.)

Mary Lufkin
Born about 1605 in Steeple Parish, Essex Co. England
Mary's father: John Lufkin (John Lufkin's occupation is listed as Baker.)

They had the following children:
Peter (~1627-~1697)
Thomas (~1630-)
Anne

Peter's occupation was listed as yeoman.
Mary's occupation at the time of their marriage was listed as spinster.

Stay tuned for the next post which will feature Peter and Mary's son, Peter. This is about to get really exciting!

Glossary of Old Occupations & Trades

Sometimes in our research work, we run across an occupation or trade name that we don't understand, as it's no longer used.

For example, in our last post about Thomas Wittum, we learn he was a yeoman. Do you know what a yeoman is? If so, great! If not, here's a resource that can help you out:

http://genealogy.about.com/library/glossary/bl_occupations.htm

It's a glossary of old occupations and trades. Let's try it out.

When we look up 'yeoman', it says a yeoman is a farmer who owns his own land.

We'll be referring back to this resource again in the future as we discover more information about other ancestors in our family line.

Thomas Wittum

Meet Thomas Wittum. He is from the earliest generation we've discovered thus far in our Witham family line:

Thomas Wittum
Born:  About 1565 - Stansgate, England
Died:  About 1601 - Steeple Parish, Essex, England

MARRIED: Ann Gaywood
Born: Jun 6, 1568 - Steeple Parish, Essex, England
Father: John Gaywood

CHILDREN:
Henry Witham
Thomas Witham 1590
John Witham 1592
James Witham 1593
Daniel Witham 1594
Peter Witham 1595 in Steeple Parish, Essex, England
Mary Witham 1597
Dorcas Witham 1598
Ann Witham 1600

Thomas Wittum's brothers were William Wytham of Feering (5 miles northwest of Witham), Peter Witham of Stansgate, and John Witham (from the will of William Wytham, 13 Nov 1592, source: Essex Archdeaconery Court Wills 1591-1597, by Frank Emmison. Peter appears as a frequent witness on other wills as well).

The original wills of Thomas, dated 1601, and William, dated 1592, are still on file in the Essex Record Office in Chelmsford, England. From Thomas' will it can be inferred that he died about 1601 in Steeple Parish, Essex Co., England.

Thomas was a yoeman, indicating a life as a farmer of some substance and standing in the community.

Stansgate was a small abbey farm area adjacent to the small town of Steeple in southeast England, on the Blackwater River, very near the North Sea, north east of London. Much of the time the Stansgate abbey did not have an operating parish church, therefore residents of Stansgate were members of Steeple Parish.

The area was and remains a low-lying marshland area of farms and small villages, very close to the sea and isolated from major population centers and roads. It is referred to as the Dengie Hundred (hundred referring to a grouping of parishes, as sub-area of a county.)

In his will Thomas passed on a manor hold property rights to farms in Chich St. Osif, which lays across the Blackwater River from Stansgate, indicative of the fact that it was easier to get around on the water than by land. The town of Witham is nearby. It is likely that the surname Witham was taken at some time when the family moved from Witham to a nearby town.

Witham Spelling Variations

In the last post, 'New Generation Chart', you may have noticed some interesting things about the names of our ancestors. You may have noted that we had 3 Peters in a row or 4 Johns in a row. But what probably stood out as most interesting is the fact that many of our ancestors used an alternate spelling of our last name. They used the name Wittum. Wittum is either an Anglo-Saxon or Teutonic spelling variation of the name Witham.

There were many reasons why names changed or evolved over time. Sometimes these variations were unintentional and sometimes they were intentional. Sometimes immigrants wanted to Americanize their names when they came here. Other times, they wanted to escape from their past life and make a fresh start with a fresh name. Sometimes there were family disputes that caused a split in the family that resulted in a slight name change variation. Still other times, it was just a simple case of immigrants telling inspectors their names and the immigration authorities would write it down the way it sounded or come up with their own spellings. And remember, many immigrants couldn't write or spell their own name.

Exactly why our ancestors used the variation Wittum is still unknown to us at this point, but our ancestors weren't the only Withams to vary the spelling of our last name.

Other spelling variations used by other Withams may include:
Witham, Withem, Wittam, Witam, Withum, Wittum, Whittam, Whitham, Whittum, Whittem, Wytham, Wyttam, Wyttum, Wythum, Withams, Wittams, Whiton, Whitten, Whittin, Whittom, Whitton, Whittone, Widden, Wihtum, Witam, Witten

New Generation Chart

In an earlier post, we listed each generation of the Witham family that we had been able to trace up to that point. If you recall, it looked something like this:

With our new information, we've been able to significantly expand upon this. Let me introduce you to several more generations of our Witham ancestors. Then, in future posts, we'll dig in and learn some fascinating things about many of these new folks. Enjoy!

*ME* Christopher Michael Witham "Mike Smith" - b.1972 (Alicia Hanley - b.1960)

Anyone notice anything about the names on our new list? I won't give it away yet, but that's what we'll talk about in the next post. See you then!

Hope to see you all there.
As ever,

The Withams in 2011

Hello, Withams, and Happy 2011!! I hope you had a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! I stopped the blog posts for a bit while everyone was focused on the Holiday season. I'd like to get them rolling again now that the new year is upon us.

2011 is going to be a very exciting year for Witham Family History. I have a gigantic surprise for you. Right before Christmas, we had a major breakthrough in our family line thanks to Becky Bucalo, great granddaughter of Alex Clay Witham. Becky is part of our research team, and boy is she good at it!

Before Becky's discovery, we could only trace our Witham family line back to George Washington Witham's parents, William and Elizabeth Witham. We didn't know anything about William and Elizabeth - just their names. Well, Becky made a connection and we can now trace our family line back to the 1500's in England. Now, that's exciting family history news!

But, it doesn't stop there. We've known for a long time that there were two groups of Withams who came over here from England. One group settled in Kittery, Maine. The other group settled in Gloucester, Massachusetts. We just never knew which group we were from. Well, we now know we are from the Kittery group. How exciting!

I have all kinds of interesting things to share with you on the Witham family history blog, so stay tuned. We will talk about our connection to the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, the Whiskey Rebellion, and more. Did you know our name wasn't always spelled Witham? I'll be posting a blog post about that soon, too.

There's lots more to come, so stay tuned in and please feel free to get involved. The more the merrier!

Talk again soon!
Mike

Alex Clay Witham & HC Witham

This is a photo of Alex Clay Witham. If you remember from an earlier post, Alex Clay is the son of Francis Calvin Witham and his first wife, Martha.

This picture is from Becky Bucalo, Alex Clay Witham's great granddaughter. We've found a few other photos where we weren't sure if it was Alex Clay or not, but this is the first photo we have found that is definitely Alex Clay.

Alex Clay Witham is on the right (from our perspective). The photo was labeled with "Dad" underneath Alex Clay's photo. It was labeled by Adlee Witham, daughter to Alex Clay and grandmother to Becky Bucalo.

The back of the photo gives us a clue as to who the other gentleman is. The back of the photo is labeled: "A.C. Witham" and "H.C. Witham".

We're not positive, but we think the other gentleman may be Henry Clay Witham. We think he may be a cousin to Alex Clay, but we're not for sure.

If you have any more information on this photo, please leave a comment below or email me.

Albany, Kentucky

Francis Calvin Witham was born in Albany, Clinton County, Kentucky in 1858. We have his residence listed as Clinton County up to the 1900 census, when he then listed Creelsboro, Russell County, Kentucky as his home.

For today's blog post, I thought we would highlight the town where Francis Calvin was born: Albany, Clinton County, Kentucky.

Albany is a city in Clinton County, Kentucky, United States. Clinton County was formed in 1836. It's name is in honor of the seventh Governor of new York State, DeWitt Clinton. The population of Albany was 2,220 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Clinton County. It is located on U.S. Route 127 about six miles from the Tennessee border.

The community grew around a tavern established by Benjamin Dowell in the early 19th century. In 1837 residents voted to make the location the seat of county government, and named the newly-formed town after Albany, New York. It was attacked by Confederate forces during the Civil War and many buildings, including the courthouse, were burned.

Label Your Photos

This is an important reminder to label your photos. You may know who all the people in the photos are right now, but if future generations are going through your old photos one day, they might not (probably won't) know who all the people are.

If you take a moment to label your photos with the name of the person/people in the photo, the date, the location, and the occasion, it makes the pictures even more enjoyable to those who view them later.

Generation Chart

Most folks reading this blog post are probably familiar with Francis Calvin Witham, but did you know we also know who Francis Calvin's parents and even his grandparents are?

Here is a family generation chart that goes back as far as we have been able to trace to this point:

William Witham (Elisabeth)
George Washington Witham - b.1831 (Catharine Bunch - b.1832)
Francis Calvin Witham - b.1858 (Mary Susan "Molly" Raines - b.1866)
Charles Washington Witham - b.1887 (Josie Mann - b.1887)
Thomas Washington Witham - b.1916 (Annabelle Stucker)
Charles Thomas Witham - b.1949 (Melody Pruiett - b.1954)
*ME* Christopher Michael Witham "Mike Smith" - b.1972 (Alicia Hanley - b.1960)

It's interesting to note there are 3 Washington's in 4 successive generations.
Did you know Washington was a family name?

Military Brothers

Here is another great photo that was shared with us by Charlene Smith, Aunt Myrtle's daughter.

You can click on the photo for a closer look.

This is a photo of Charles Washington & Josie Witham's sons dressed in their military uniforms.

From left to right: Tom, Ed, Hank, Warren.
Missing is Uncle Ray, who also served in the military.

Charlene told me that during WWII, the newspaper wrote an article about grandma Josie Witham because she had 5 sons in the service. Charlene thinks she has the article somewhere and said she would be happy to share it with us when she finds it.

Second Cousin Once Removed

If someone came up to you and told you they were your second cousin once removed, would you understand what they mean?

Sandy Sparks McCurley and I got to talking about this one day. We've been working together on family history on and off for a few years now. Sandy was trying to figure out how she was related to Uncle Ray Witham. I wasn't much help, as I didn't know much about figuring out how you're related to someone else in the family beyond the obvious everyday relationships that we're all familiar with. But I became determined to figure it out.

I found a little webpage that proved quite informative:
http://www.genealogy.com/16_cousn.html

First, it lists some terms we need to familiarize ourselves with:
Cousin (a.k.a "first cousin")
Your first cousins are the people in your family who have two of the same grandparents as you. In other words, they are the children of your aunts and uncles.
Second Cousin
Your second cousins are the people in your family who have the same great-grandparents as you., but not the same grandparents.
Third, Fourth, and Fifth Cousins
Your third cousins have the same great-great-grandparents, fourth cousins have the same great-great-great-grandparents, and so on.
Removed
When the word "removed" is used to describe a relationship, it indicates that the two people are from different generations. You and your first cousins are in the same generation (two generations younger than your grandparents), so the word "removed" is not used to describe your relationship. The words "once removed" mean that there is a difference of one generation. For example, your mother's first cousin is your first cousin, once removed. This is because your mother's first cousin is one generation younger than your grandparents and you are two generations younger than your grandparents. This one-generation difference equals "once removed." Twice removed means that there is a two-generation difference. You are two generations younger than a first cousin of your grandmother, so you and your grandmother's first cousin are first cousins, twice removed.
They also list a handy chart with instructions on how to figure out your relationship to someone else in the family. Let me demonstrate the chart for you now. Let's figure out how I'm related to Charlene Smith, Aunt Myrtle's daughter.

According to the instructions for the chart, I'm supposed to find the ancestor we have in common. That would be Charles Washington Witham. The next thing I do is determine how Charlene and I are related to Charles Washington. Charlene is his grandchild, so I'll find the GRANDCHILD column at the top of the chart. I am Charles Washington's great grandchild, so I'll find the G-GRANDCHILD row on the left. Now to see where they intersect....it appears that Charlene and I are first cousins once removed.

Go ahead...you try!

Old Witham Family Photo Roundup

Who doesn't love old family photos!?

Thank you so much to everyone who has shared photos and information with us so far. We're looking for more. If you have old Witham family photos, please plan to bring them to the next Witham Family Reunion. I plan to bring a portable scanner with me to the reunion and I can scan your pictures on the spot, return them to you right away, and then make either digital copies or prints available to everyone who is interested in them.

Thank you! I can't wait to see all the old pictures we bring!

Withams - Bill & Zella, Aunt Ex, Mary Susan, Charley & Josie

I really like this picture that was shared with us by Sandy Sparks McCurley.

When Sandy shared the picture with me, it was the first time I had ever seen a picture of Charley & Josie Witham.

It also shows Bill & Zella Witham (my only picture of them so far), Aunt Exonia, and Mary Susan "Molly" Rains.

(You can click on the picture to get a better view.)

From left to right: Zella, Bill, Aunt Ex, Mary Susan, Charley, Josie.

If anyone has additional information, please feel free to share it below by leaving a comment or you can email me and I'll be happy to add it for you.
